🌿 Publisher's Review:
Golden Ages
History might tell us that an army besieged a city, intent on breaching its walls. It would then say, "This is the human condition... it has always repeated itself throughout ages and history, and will repeat countless times in the future,... and people have grown accustomed to its news and living with it." But when a person lives in the heart of the besieged city... things will be very different.. for hearing is not like seeing.. never like seeing. ...
🌿 My Opinion:
Honestly, one of the best novels I've read for young adults ❤️
The novel talks about the conquest of Constantinople, but from the perspective of an Orthodox Christian physician.. He initially viewed the conquest as devastation and destruction, which is how it comes across at the beginning of the novel.. After the Ottomans entered the city and he interacted with them, his view of many things changed, especially regarding the medicine he had learned.. The physician became a student of a Muslim physician named Aq Shams al-Din and learned a great deal from the sciences of the Muslims through him. After that, he immigrated and practiced what he learned, passing on his knowledge to a young physician named Girolamo Fracastoro (these are real historical figures).
The dialogues between the story's characters carry many lessons within them..
Lessons from war, conquest, the passing of days among people.. and the difference between nations and their morals.. and the good that lies within evil...
Honestly, a very profound novel.. As a mother, I loved it and was touched by it, but it's best if parents and children read it together, and even better if parents read it first.. because the discussions it contains are very, very, very important.
