🍡 Jasmine Flower 🍡
🍡 A Novel for Young Adults 🍡
🌿 Publisher's Review:
Birds migrate in search of warmth, and humans migrate in search of safety. When Maryam's father decided to immigrate, her life turned upside down. She embarked on a journey she never expected, leaving behind her familiar life, her friend Marissa, her cat Lucy, and the scent of jasmine. She traveled towards the unknown with her parents. On a journey fraught with dangers, to a new country, a new culture, new smells and foods, a language she didn't understand, and classmates who never accepted her and bullied her, especially Tamara. So, how was her journey? Did she find a friend to share her times with? And was she able to overcome the obstacles to enjoy warmth in a new country?
🌿 My Opinion:
I found myself within the pages of this novel in the alienation I experienced as a child... in the difficulty of learning a new language... and in the difficulty of integration...
And I found myself within its pages as a mother... trying to balance integration and preserving our religion and customs... trying to comfort her daughter and encourage her to learn the language and integrate into a strange society... and trying to absorb the shock of mixed emotions to maintain the balance of her home...
I saw alienation through Maryam's eyes... and I saw it through her parents' eyes...
Maryam and her family rode in boats of death in search of life, away from the fear of her father being called up for military service...
She left her beautiful Damascus home, her jasmine-scented neighborhood, her friend, her cat, and her grandparents' house...
She left everything and traveled with her parents towards the unknown...
She was subjected to a great deal of bullying... as were her parents...
But in the pages of this book... we realize that good exists in people... despite the existence of evil... and that one must act with good morals to win hearts... instead of retreating and losing everything...
A beautiful novel with a feminine touch... it talks about sewing doll clothes and folk dancing... and I really liked a beautiful reference at the beginning of the story... that school uniforms are standardized... a short skirt for girls and trousers for boys...
Maryam couldn't dress like them, for she had an innate sense of modesty... so she wore trousers under her skirt to maintain her decency...
